Research on Building History in Canada
Research a building involves two broad types of information - site-specific information and contextual information. Site Specific information provides details about:
- Date of construction
- Architect and builder
- Original layout and appearance
- Materials used in construction
- Assessed value of property at the time of construction and over time
- Renovations and physical improvements
- Use and occupants
- Relationship to adjacent buildings and surrounding community
Site information must often be gathered from a variety of public and private sources. While there are several outlets of researching information, it is possible that not all of the details will be found, since some sources of information may no longer exist or may never have existed.
